Omegafriends Background: Slade Wilson was born 81 years ago into a patriotic American family, with a father and grandfather who were both officers in the U.S. Marine Corps. Though he saw very little of his father, Slade idolized the man for most of his early life. When his father died early in the Korean War, 16-year-old Slade coped by lying about his age and joining the Corps himself. Slade was soon shipped off to North Korea, where his natural skill and enthusiasm caught the eye of the top brass, who recruited him into a special experimental program with the secret goal of creating enhanced soldiers to fight against the super soldiers that the Soviets allegedly already had. The experiment seemed to be a success: Slade's intelligence, reflexes, stamina, and strength were all greatly enhanced, and he was able to recover from injury far faster than was natural.
. . Unfortunately, the side effects gradually became more and more apparent each day. Slade's capacity for sympathy decreased, and he began to show signs of sociopathy and antisocial personality disorder. He also suffered from sporadic episodes of hypersensitivity to light and sound, and even seizures. As the side effects increased, Slade went mad and escaped into the wilderness, where he managed to evade search attempts for twenty years.
. . During his time in the wilderness, Slade gained a measure of mental stability as he hunted the wildlife, and learned to relish the thrill of the hunt. It also became apparent that he was aging much slower than was natural; after his twenty years in the wilderness, he looked, at most, 8 years older. When Slade finally decided to leave the jungle, he found there was no shortage of work opportunities for a gun-for-hire in Park Chung-hee's South Korea. Slade was paid handsomely for a variety of wet works jobs, and he spent most of his 40's (looking 30) travelling the globe, offering his services to the highest bidder. Slade, thanks to enhanced mental and physical abilities, also used this time to master his marksmanship skills, sword and archery techniques, and seven different styles of martial arts. Slade also honed his skills of deception, sabotage, and the art of the double-cross; 32 years ago, he simultaneously worked for three different Afghani warlords, secretly playing them against each other. By the time they realized that Slade was a triple-agent, Slade had already emptied all of their bank accounts.
. . 30 years ago, Slade received a job offer in Venture City: destroy Gamma Jack, a member of the super team called the Alpha Pals. Though the job paid well, it was the challenge that interested Slade most, and he accepted. After several years of skirmishes with the team, Slade eventually lured several of the Alpha Pals into a trap that separated the heroes from each other. Though the rest of the team escaped, all that was ever found of Gamma Jack after the incident was his tattered and torn cape. After Slade's success, he decided it would be in his best interest to move to the city of Entropolis to minimize opportunity for revenge from Gamma Jack's former friends.
. . In recent years, the city of Entropolis has achieved the highest crime rates in the history of the U.S. Supervillains control the city from the shadows, while all but the toughest of heroes are destroyed and the police are either too afraid to fight back, or are too satisfied with the substantial bribes they are receiving. Slade has become dissatisfied with the state of the city, and decided it is time for a change of scenery. It is time to return to Venture City.
Personality: Slade's personality has gone through a number of intense shifts through his lifetime, but in recent years he typically maintains an unsettlingly calm composure, even when engaging in intensely cruel or violent activities. (It should be noted that he doesn't actually enjoy cruelty or violence; he just isn't particularly bothered by them, either. They are simply means to an end.) There are times when Slade's composure cracks, however: he really doesn't like to lose, and he must always be in control. When Slade's plans don't work or he loses control, he has been known to engage in brief outbursts of rage and frustration. He can become a bit obsessive in the pursuit of the goals he sets, and his willingness to sacrifice anything to achieve them can be frightening. It is also Slade's greatest weakness, as his obsessions have been known to cloud his typically clear judgement.
. . Slade is clever and calculating, always manipulating his environment to his benefit. He usually does not appear in person until he has established a decisive advantage for himself, and feels no shame in fleeing if an enemy manages to achieve the advantage over him. He often prefers to bait others into traps rather than directly confront them himself, and even when a hero thinks they are fighting Slade, it is usually a robotic duplicate instead, being monitored and controlled by the real Slade from a remote secure location. Slade also frequently uses underhanded psychological attacks on his enemies, using blackmail and lies to turn those who would ally against him against each other.
. . Slade is a very private person, to say the least, and prefers to remain an enigma to both his enemies and his professional allies, only telling them as much as he feels they need to know. This serves two purposes. First, the enigma gives him a decisive psychological advantage over his enemies. Second, it allows him to keep his personal life completely separate from his "professional" one. When he is out of costume, Slade is a charismatic and friendly man. He appears generous with his fortune (which he will claim he earned through various "wise investments"), is gregarious and even a bit of a flirt sometimes. The apparent personality shift is so profound that few people ever make the connection between the two identities, despite the fact that his super villain name is his real first name.
. . The most recent change in Slade's personality has been a desire to find an apprentice. Though Slade's body is still relatively young, he is acutely aware of the fact that he is actually an old man, and will not be getting any younger. Because of this, Slade wants to find someone worthy, and mold them in his own image, so that they may one day carry on his legacy even after he is dead.
Powers:
(Note: Slade's abilities are not well described in the show, but discussed in great detail in the comics which the show was based off of. The powers below are for the most part taken from the comics.)
The secret experiment that the U.S. Military performed on Slade grants him a variety of enhancements:
-Enhanced Mind: Slade's brain is able to process information nine times faster than the average, and he has a superior eidetic memory. Combined with his considerable experience and intuition, he often able to predict the strategy his enemies will use even before they do. In addition, the combination of his enhanced mind and senses allows him to perceive the "tells" of his enemies' combat movements. Preparatory muscle twitches, eye movement, and subtle shifts of an enemy's posture allow him to know how they will strike before they strike, so he can defend himself flawlessly.
-Enhanced Reflexes: Slade possesses superhuman reflexes (aided by his enhanced senses), allowing him to dodge fast-moving projectiles such as arrows, bullets, energy blasts, etc.
-Enhanced Strength: Slade possesses the strength of ten men and can bench press at least 800 lbs.
-Enhanced Stamina: Slade's physical endurance is at least three times greater than that of an Olympic marathon gold-medalist. He can maintain a full sprint for over ten minutes.
-Enhanced Speed: Slade's sprint speed has been clock at up to 30 mph.
-Enhanced Senses: Slade's sight, hearing, and sense of smell are at least three times as acute as the typical human.
-Regenerative Healing Factor: Slade is able to heal quickly from almost any injury, as his body tissue repairs itself after being damaged. The more severe the wound, the longer it takes to heal, and in the case of lost limbs (or his missing eye), Slade is unable to regenerate what he has lost. There have been times when he seemed dead, only to have his heart restart hours or even days later with no apparent ill effect. This healing factor also seems to have slowed down his physical aging to about one third the norm. His white hair is not actually a result of his age, but a side effect of his altered DNA.
- Enhanced Immunity: In addition to being immune to poisons and other toxic substances, few diseases seem to have any effect on Slade.
Combat training: Slade has mastered the use of a wide variety of weapons, both contemporary and archaic. He is particularly skilled with the sword, staff, pistol, and rifle. He also has extensive unarmed combat training, and is a master of at least seven different martial arts.
Money and Equipment: Slade's fortune (currently in the billions of dollars) and black-market connections have allowed him to build a vast arsenal. In his vault, he possess a dizzying variety of firearms, explosives, melee weapons, high-tech prototypes and more. His armor and sword of choice are made of a volatile material called promethium. Promethium is an expensive but nearly indestructible material, but in its pure form has been known to have long-term side effects after prolonged exposure, similar to radiation poisoning. Due to his regenerative healing factor, Slade seems to be immune to these side effects.
Black-Market Connections: Slade knows how to get his hands on almost anything he needs through a network of contacts in various black-markets around the world. Sometimes he uses this to get a hold of illegal experimental weapons, while other times he uses this to get a hold of whatever rare item happens to be the One Weakness of a powerful enemy (glowing green rocks, magic scissors, the guitar pick of destiny, etc.).
Jack of all Trades: Slade's enhanced mind allows him to master a variety of skill very quickly. Though he is not the best of thebest in these areas, he has on multiple occasions shown high levels of aptitude in hacking computer systems, repairing complicated technology, understanding chemistry, lock picking, hunting, and more.
Sample:
After the trap has been sprung and the heroes have been trapped, Slade emerges from shadows, walking almost casually.
"Well, well, I have to admit, I didn't quite expect it to be that easy."
He stops in the middle of the room, directly beneath its one light, illuminating him sharply. He takes a long look at each of his victims. The stasis generators would keep even the strongest of them completely immobile, but he knew they could hear his every word.
"I must admit, I am a bit disappointed. I had expected better."
He takes two steps toward the one called QuickWit. Under his mask, Slade grins just slightly, and perhaps this change is visible to the prisoner through Slade's one exposed eye, or the tone of his voice. "What, no witty remark? No one-liner? I do look forward to those."
Slade shrugs, and turns to walk back toward the center of the room, "Oh, don't worry my friends. Your destruction will be quick and painless. Your suffering will provide no benefit to me."
Just then, the clam-shaped device on his belt starts blinking and beeping. Slade unhooks it, flips it open, and stares at its screen for about a moment. "Well, that was unexpected. We have another guest. It seems the lot of you may prove more useful alive, for the moment."
